So you have a fully functional M-16 5.56mm rifle and you need to know how to maintain it? First, congratulations on scoring a fine weapon. You can click on the link to download the full text of the official Army M-16 manual absolutely free (well, not exactly free since you’ve already paid for it with your tax dollars, but at least you won’t have to pay for it again).
The M-16 was first used in Vietnam, and has been widely used in the U.S. military since 1969. It fires a 5.56mm x 45mm round with a muzzle velocity of 3,250 fps delivering 800 rounds per minute in full auto mode. More modern versions have the ability to switch between full auto, 3-round bursts, or semi-automatic. The maximum effective range is 460 meters. The civilian version of the M-16 is the AR-15 and is one of the most popular sporting rifles in production. The M-16 is the longest serving rifle in American military history, but it has been largely replaced by the M-4 Carbine in most Army combat units.
Again, the AR-15 is the civilian version and is a lot of fun to shoot. The beauty of the M-16 however, is that it comes with a very expensive yet thoroughly enjoyable full-auto mode. Since most of us aren’t licensed for toys such as this, you can get a taste of just how much fun an M-16 can be on a range by watching the video below.
