Terror attacks continue since the first attack last week. It seems like we are living in the beginning stages of the Third Intifada. All of Israel is on alert for more terror attacks, with as many as three to four attacks happening daily.
Israel is a dangerous place to be during times like these, a fact that is reflected in Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan’s call for any civilians legally carrying a firearm to “be alert and prevent another terrorist attack”.
Unfortunately, gun laws are pretty strict in Israel, especially if you are an immigrant. Given the number of attacks that happen each day, the government should ease restrictions to allow all law-abiding citizens, including immigrants, to arm themselves.
Here is a brief description of some of the gun laws in Israel:
- Citizens who served in the IDF must be over the age of 21
- Citizens who have not served in the IDF must be over the age of 27
- Non-citizen residents must be over the age of 45
- You must be a citizen or a non-citizen permanent resident who has lived in Israel for 3 years and pass a background check.
- You must live or work in high-risk danger areas.
Although I do agree with some of the gun laws, I take issue with the law that requires immigrants to have been in the country for three years. A lot can happen in that period of time, especially during times such as this. I have only been in Israel for two and half years, and during that time I have experienced a war as well as a possible intifada.
I also take issue with the law of requiring you to live or work in a dangerous area. Israel is a very small country, and during times such as these low-risk areas become increasingly hard to find. As you can see as of now terror attacks are happening all across the country. If you click on this link, you can see updates on the terror attacks and other situations that the Israeli mainstream media is not covering.
Israel is supposed to be a place for all Jews to be able to fight and defend themselves. If the current gun laws do not change Israel needs to find ways to better defend her citizens.
